There are four sections of instruments in a
symphony
orchestra
:
strings
,
percussion
,
brass
and
woodwind
.
The
strings
section is at the front of the orchestra. It is the
biggest section and consists of the
violins
,
violas
,
cellos
and
the
double bass
.
The
woodwind
section is behind the strings section. The
flutes
,
oboes
,
clarinets
and
bassoons
are all woodwind.
The
brass
section is on each side of the woodwind section.
The
trumpets
,
trombones
and the
tuba
are on the right of
the woodwind section. The
French horns
are on the left.
Behind the brass and woodwind sections are the
percussion
instruments –
drums
and
cymbals
, for example, and
castanets
.
