Unit 3 Weather and climate
altitude:
the height of a place above the level of the
sea.
anemometer:
an instrument used to measure how
fast or slow the wind is blowing.
atmospheric conditions:
the temperature,
precipitation, wind and air pressure in a place.
barometer:
an instrument used to measure air
pressure.
drought:
a long period of time with no precipitation.
greenhouse effect:
a situation produced when
ultraviolet radiation is trapped in the atmosphere
by the ozone layer. It causes the temperature of
the atmosphere to rise.
lines of latitude:
imaginary horizontal lines around
the Earth. They are used to indicate the distance
from the equator of a place.
ozone layer:
a layer of waste gases around the
atmosphere that traps ultraviolet radiation from
the Sun.
petroleum products:
products such as petrol,
fuel oil and plastic that are made from petroleum.
precipitation:
water in the form of rain, snow
or hail.
rain gauge:
an instrument used to measure
precipitation.
thermometer:
an instrument used to measure
how hot or cold it is.
torrential rain:
a large amount of rain in a short
period of time.
waste gases:
gases such as carbon dioxide that
are produced when petroleum products are
burned.
