My pencil case
How to start
Show flashcards of classroom objects and encourage
children to say the words. Ask questions, for example,
What
colour is the pencil sharpener? Do you have a rubber in your
pencil case? Can you show me your scissors, please?
Ask children to take out three classroom objects and
place them on their desks. Show flashcards (pencil, pencil
sharpener, scissors, crayons, glue, rubber) one by one. If
they have the object on their desk, they stand up and show
it then sit down. Repeat with other objects.
Activities: step-by-step guide
Activity 1
Look at the pictures on the page and make sure children
are familiar with all of the items. Ask them to take out
their crayons or provide crayons for children to share. They
will need red, yellow, blue, green, black, pink, purple and
brown crayons for the activity. Say, for example,
Show me
your green crayon. Pick up your red crayon. Put your green
crayon between your black crayon and pink crayon.
Explain to children they will listen and colour. Do the first one
as an example. Say:
My pencil case is RED
and encourage
children to show their red crayon and to colour the pencil
case red.
Track 4.
Play the listening and allow time for children
to colour the illustrations.
When they have finished, ask children to work in pairs and
check their answers. Encourage them to use English to
share their ideas. Listen again and check.
Assessment opportunity
Ask review questions, for example,
What colour is the pencil
case? What colour are the scissors?
Read the sentence at the bottom of the page.
Activity 2
Track 5.
Listen to the chant. Do actions or show
flashcards. Listen again, and children join in.
DO
In pairs ask children to compare and contrast the objects
in their pencil cases.
What’s this?
Tell children to look at the photo in the bottom right hand
corner of the page. Ask
What’s this?
Extra idea!
Revision
Ask children to each put two classroom objects on their
desks. Say
I spy with my little eye a classroom object that
is…
Extension
True or False. Tell children to work in pairs. They secretly
hide a classroom object from their pencil case behind their
back. They say a sentence, for example:
I’ve got a pencil
sharpener.
The other child says ‘true’ or ‘false’ and the
object is shown. They then change turns or work with a new
partner.
Listen to the unit song and do the actions.
