Detectives of the past
Look at this painting from the Paleolithic Period, which shows
a group of rhinoceros and big cats. The most remarkable thing
about this image is that it does not come from Africa, but the
southeast of France. It was painted by members of our species on
the walls of the Chauvet Cave around 30 000 years ago.
During this long period of time, the Earth’s climate changed many
times. Ecosystems changed and different species of animals mi-
grated from one place to another or became extinct.
No concrete evidence survives from that time. We literally need to
unearth it in order to learn about this period and do detective work
to establish what the lives and mentality of its inhabitants were like.
In this task you are going to take on the role of detectives. You will travel back in time and discover what
life in Prehistory was like through the surviving works of art. Then you are going to present your discoveries
and conclusions to the rest of the class.
