School activities
How to start
Show classroom object flashcards and encourage children
to say the words. Ask questions, for example:
What colour
is the pencil sharpener? What are these? Have you got a
crayon?
Ask children to take out their pencil cases and to work in
groups of two or three. They place three items from their
pencil case on the desk and describe one of the items, for
example:
It’s small. It’s blue.
Their partners point to the
correct itemand say the item, for example:
pencil sharpener.
Activities: step-by-step guide
Activity 1
Look at the pictures and words. Tell children to trace the
words carefully. As they are working, walk around the class
observing fine motor skills. When they have finished, ask
them to say the words in pairs.
Show different classroom objects and ask children to do
actions for the words.
Show classroomobjects flashcards and talk about the things
that can be done with these objects, for example,
We use a
pencil to draw and write. We use scissors to cut.
Activity 2
Ask children to talk about what they like doing in class and
at school. What’s their favourite action/activity? Which one
do they like least? Ask questions, for example,
Do you like
singing? Do you like reading?
Activity 3
DO
Ask children to stand up and mime the different
activities.
Discuss when and why we need to be quiet at school.
Read the sentence at the bottom of the page.
Extra idea!
Assessment opportunity
Recap the lesson with the class. Ask:
How did we begin
today’s lesson? What did we do next? And after that? Was
there anything new?
Encouraging children to stop and
reflect will help them remember.
Review
Ask children to draw themselves doing their favourite
activity. When they are finished, they can show their picture
to a partner and describe the activities they like.
Say the unit chant and show flashcards. Encourage children
to show their classroom objects or do activities. For the
karaoke version, ask different children to come to the front
of the class and hold up the correct flashcards as the rest of
the class says the chant.
Extension
Think of different classroom activities or objects for the
activities in Activity 1. For example, listen CD,
computer, other
children, the teacher, the radio,
write
pen, pencil, crayon…
Encourage children to work in pairs and to brainstorm
things that can be cut with scissors. Tell them they have two
minutes to think or draw things. Elicit answers, for example,
paper, hair, card, a box, ribbon, string, tape, fabric…
