I grow
How to start
•
Play some quiet music. Ask children to put their heads on
their desks and close their eyes. Tell them to think about
when they were ‘little’. What can they remember fromwhen
they were babies? What was their favourite toy? Where did
they sleep? How did they used to look?
•
Tell children to open their eyes and share ideas. What things
have changed? Did they sleep in a bed? Did they have teeth
when they were babies? Did they have long hair?
Teacher Tip
•
Some children might use L1 to share some of their ideas.
Encourage the use of English through positive reinforcement
and by recasting their answers in English.
Activities: step-by-step guide
Activity 1
•
Tell children to take out their story books OR take out the
story cards. Look at the title of the story
(Ben and the Baby).
Ask: What’s the story going to be about? Who’s the baby in
the story? Ben’s brother? Sister? A friend?
Invite children to
guess and share ideas.
•
Look at the first picture of the story and ask children to
identify the things they see in the picture. Explain that Ben
and his granny are at home looking at photos.
•
Play the audio track of the story. Tell children to listen and
follow along (either with the book or with the story cards).
Pause the story before the end and see if children can guess
who the baby is. Finish the story and check understanding.
•
Ask children to scan through the pages of the story (or stick
the story cards up on the board) to see if they can find where
Coco is ‘hiding’ in the pictures.
Activity 2
Assessment opportunity
•
Ask children to look at the pictures. Tell them to find the
baby and write 1 next to the picture. Then they put numbers
2, 3 and 4 next to the pictures in the order that people grow.
Activity 3
•
Ask the children to draw pictures of themselves as a baby,
and as they are now. In pairs, they discuss the differences as
Ben did in the story.
What’s this?
•
Tell the children to look at the photo in the corner of the
page. Ask
What are these? Teeth.
