What my body needs
How to start
•
Ask the children to think of three things that they do every
day (get up, eat, go to school…). Encourage them to think
about things we need to have energy and live healthy lives
(food, exercise and water).
Activities: step-by-step guide
Activity 1
•
Tell the children that they are going to hear things that our
bodies need. Tell them to take out the stickers. Say the first
word and ask them to find the sticker and put it in the first
box. Continue until all the stickers are in place.
•
Play Track 10 and tell the children to listen and point to the
word and to check they have stuck the sticker in the correct
place.
Activity 2
•
Look at the pictures and ask the children what the people
are doing in each of the four action pictures. Then point to
the three things in the middle and ask the children what
they are.
•
Ask the children to match the activity to the object. Tell the
children to match the healthy habit with the object.
Extra ideas!
Revision
•
Look at the pictures of the habits and ask the children to
circle the things that they do.
•
Divide the class into small groups. Tell them to play
‘Pictionary’. Taking turns, each of them will draw one of
the main objects (towel, comb, brush…) and the rest of the
group will have to guess the action.
Extension
•
Bring in realia (towel, toothbrush, soap, a pillow, a racquet,
a bottle of water) and encourage the children to pretend to
use one of the items. The rest of the class call out the name
of the action.
•
Divide the class into groups and give each group some
cardboard. Tell them to make posters about the actions
our bodies need. Tell them to draw (e.g. a toothbrush and
toothpaste) and to write words or short sentences (e.g.:
Brush your teeth!
). Help them by writing scaffolding on the
blackboard
(My body needs… I drink water…).
•
Ask the class why we need food. Draw a mind map on the
board and ask class to help build it. Write in the centre
‘My
body needs’
and then draw lines coming out of it. Elicit ideas
to link the lines, such as:
water, exercise, sleep, food.
•
Write
How healthy are you?
on the board. Get the class to
discuss with you what it means to be healthy. Get them to
tell you things they think are healthy and unhealthy. Write
a smiley face in one column and sad face in another and ask
them to tell you in which column to write their ideas.
