Emotions
How to start
Draw a happy face, a sad face and an angry face on the
board. Invite children to share things that make them feel
this way.
Activities: step-by-step guide
Activity 1
Tell the children to look at the photos and say how the child
in each is feeling. Play Track 11 and tell the children to call
out the number when they hear the emotion.
Activity 2
Ask the children to stand up andmove around the classroom
quietly. Play some music and every few seconds stop it. The
children have to make a face to whoever is nearest them
and that child has to say the emotion: happy, sad or angry.
Tell the children to sit down and colour the stars. You can either
ask them to colour depending on howwell they expressed the
emotion OR depending on howmuch they liked the activity.
Activity 3
Ask the children to draw a picture of how they are feeling
today.
When they are finished they can compare their pictures
with other classmates saying, for example,
I’m happy.
Extra ideas!
Revision
Hand out two squares of paper to each student. Ask them to
draw something that makes them happy on one square and
something that makes them sad on the other. Make two
posters for the whole classroom, one with a happy face and
one with a sad face, and stick them on the wall.
Ask the children to go and stick the drawing that makes
them happy under the happy face and the drawing that
makes them sad under the sad face. When the posters
are completed talk about behaviour in class that makes us
happy or sad.
Extension
Brainstorm different emotions, for example, scared, tired,
worried. Encourage children to describe themselves to one
another using an emotion. For example, saying
I have long,
blonde hair
in a very tired voice. The other child has to guess
the emotion (You are tired!)
Memory game: Ask for volunteers (or choose them) and tell
them to come to the front of the class. In a line, say how
they are feeling. Each one adds a feeling.
‘I feel sad’,
‘I feel sad and tired’,
‘I feel sad, tired and happy’
