How can we classify plants?
Living things
Plants form one of the five kingdoms of living things. As members
of the same kingdom, all plants have some characteristics
in common. For example, they have cells with a rigid cell
wall and they have roots, stems and leaves.
Seed plants
Seed plants reproduce by creating seeds.
There are two main types of seed plant:
angiosperms and gymnosperms.
Angiosperms grow flowers. That is
why they are also called
flowering
plants
. Fruit grows from the flowers
and the seeds grow inside the fruit.
Gymnosperms
produce
cones
. That
is why they are also called
conifers
.
The seeds grow inside the cones.
Some conifer seeds are called
nuts.
Apple trees are angiosperms.
They
produce flowers that develop into apples.
The seeds can be seen inside the apples.
This conifer creates pine cones.
Inside
the pine cones we can see the seeds.
These seeds are called
pine nuts
.
