Spain has hundreds of kilometres of dry river beds. People use them for
walking or mountain biking.
Many rivers have dried up in
Spain. This can happen because
of natural activity, such as a lack
of rainfall. But it’s often because
of human activity. Sometimes we
over-use rivers for the cultivation
of crops. When dams are built,
the lower part of the water course
can also dry up.
Human activity can also poison rivers with
pollution
. Factories let their
waste water flow into a river without cleaning it first. Even dropping
rubbish on the ground can poison underground streams.
We can look after our rivers and waterways in small ways:
•
We can be careful with our rubbish and put it in a bin.
•
We should be careful not to overuse water every day.
How can you
stay dry
in a river?
