There can be many different organisms in an ecosystem. These organisms don’t
usually live in isolation, they form groups called populations and communities.
A
population
is a group of organisms that live together and belong to the same
species. A
community
is a collection of different populations that live together
in one place. Which populations live in this ecosystem?
In an ecosystem, we can classify the relationships between individual organisms.
Intraspecific relationships
exist between individual members of the same
species. For example, in the illustration on the right, the population of ducks
have an intraspecific relationship.
Interspecific relationships
exist between individual members of different
species. For example, ducks and eagles have an interspecific relationship.
These ducks are a population
because they belong to the
same species.
