The world around us
24
Can atmospheric
conditions be
dangerous?
The ozone layer protects us against the Sun’s harmful UV-B rays. But in some places there are holes in it.
This has been caused by humans using too many chemical products which destroy it. The hole in the ozone
layer is larger over Australia than anywhere else in the populated world. In Australia children wear special
swimsuits to protect themselves on the beach and they wear hats when they are outdoors.
We should always protect ourselves when we go outdoors if it’s sunny. In some parts of Spain the weather
in summer is extremely hot and the power of the Sun is very strong. Sometimes temperatures are over
40ºC. It’s especially hot between the hours of 2 pm and 6 pm.
