The world around us
On maps and globes there are
imaginary lines
. We use these lines to describe a location on the Earth’s
surface.
There are semicircular vertical lines from the
North Pole
to the
South Pole
. These are called
meridians
.
They’re measured in degrees (º)
E
(east) or
W
(west). Meridian 0º is the
Greenwich Meridian
.
There are circular horizontal lines around the Earth. These are called
parallels
. They’re measured in
degrees (º)
N
(north) or
S
(south). Parallel 0º is the
Equator
. It divides the Earth into the
Northern
Hemisphere
and the
Southern Hemisphere
.
