Astronomers

People originally believed that the Earth was
flat
.
But in Ancient History, astronomers calculated
it was a
sphere
. They observed that the Earth’s
shadow was a sphere. They also observed how the
Earth’s curved shape made objects visible from
high places that weren’t visible from lower places.
At the start of the 17th century, the
telescope
was invented. Telescopes use
lenses
to help
us see objects that are far away. Astronomers
discovered planets such as
Uranus
and
Neptune
using telescopes. Today’s telescopes can see far
into space. Some are even located in space!
