MANAGING INFORMATION
3.1.
Social bookmarking
Social bookmarking is an Internet tool that lets us organise, use and share
information more
efficiently
5
. It works in a way that is similar to the
Favourites
option of a browser program, but with an extra advantage: all of our content is
stored in
the cloud
4
so we can access it from any location in the world. Some of
the most popular social bookmarking applications are:
Delicious
Delicious is a service that lets us save our favourite web pages along with a
description and a list of key words (tags) for easier classification. We can share this
information with other people and see the content that they have bookmarked.
For example, if you are working on a project with a group of people, everyone
can tag information they find about the topic and then share it with the other
members of the group. Delicious is also available for mobile devices.
Diigo
Diigo defines itself as a ‘multi-tool for knowledge management’. Among other
functions, it lets us bookmark the pages that we visit and create a digital library
in the cloud, with links, notes and images. We can access this library from any
location and select the information we want to share. Diigo is also available for
mobile devices.
SOCIAL
BOOKMARKING
Most social bookmarking
applications can be linked
to other services, like
Facebook andTwitter. In this
way, people can share new
content with friends and
followers almost instantly.
Evernote
Evernote provides a convenient workspace where we can collect information by
capturing articles and images from the Internet. Then we can add notes and share
information with other people. The application also has a search function for finding
specific details in the content that we have saved. Finally, Evernote is convenient for
making presentations, and is available for mobile devices.
