Look up information about safety switches. Explain how they are used and why they are necessary.
Power tools
Electric drill
: Makes holes as the drill bit
turns and moves forward.
Used to make more precise holes more
easily.
Drill bits
: Inserted into the front of the drill
to make holes. They are made of different
materials and have different lengths and
diameters for different jobs.

If you had to make a hole in a thick piece of wood which tool would
you use? Why?
Circular saw
: This uses a
blade with teeth that cuts
as it moves or turns, with
the material clamped in
place; you can also fix the
saw in place and move
the material as the blade
turns.
It is mainly used for
straight or angled cuts on
large sheets or planks of
wood.
Band saw
: This uses a
blade with teeth that
goes up and down. As
with a circular saw, you
can move the machine
and clamp the material or
vice versa.
It is used to cut large
sheets or planks, and
rigid metal. You can make
straight, angled or curved
cuts.
Power tools
Gimlet
: Used to drill through thin pieces
of wood and make small holes.
Hand drill
: Used to make more precise
holes quickly and more easily, using
different drill bits.
