How to use sandpaper:
1.
Clamp the piece of wood to the workbench so it doesn’t move.
2.
Take a piece of wood and wrap the sandpaper around it to
make it easier to work.
3.
Sand the wood following the grain. Start with a coarse grit and
move to a finer grit to make a perfectly smooth surface.

Sandpaper
: This is made of abrasive
material glued to a paper support.
The size of the grit (sand or other
abrasive material) is given by the
number on the back of the sheet
of sandpaper: from 60 to 600. It
is best to start sanding an object
with
coarse
11
grit (100), move on to
a medium grit (180) and finish off
with a fine grit (280).
The lower the grit number, the
coarser the sandpaper.
Plane
: Used for shaping wood by shaving off
thin strips of wood. It has a wooden body with
a slot in the bottom for a sloping steel blade
which is held in place by a
wedge
12
.
Wire brush
: A brush with wire
bristles
13
which is used for cleaning rasps and files.
Die grinder
: Uses a round tool called a
burr which is made of abrasive material. It
creates a good finish and is very precise. It is
used to shape flat or round pieces.
Planing machine
: Has a rotating cylinder
with a set of blades. It is used to smooth
wood. The machine moves along the grain
of the wood and the blades shave off strips
of wood as they turn.
Sanding machine
: Smooths the wood with
sandpaper which passes over the surface
making a vibrating movement.
Power tools

bristles
: very strong hairs
