3. Wood and its derivatives
When you have finished your jigsaw puzzle, try another
challenge.
Look at the pictures:
1.
What material is it made of? Is it made from a
block, a plank or a sheet of wood?
2.
Make a list of the procedures that you
think you will do to the piece of wood.
How many cuts were made in the piece?
You can see that, despite the complex
shapes, it’s not difficult to make.
3.
Name the equipment and tools used to
do the procedures.
4.
Design it differently so that the pieces
stay together once they’ve been put
together.
5.
Would you be able to make one?
INTERLOCKING PUZZLE PIECES
If you want to make a puzzle with a drawing or photo,
you should stick it on to the wood you are going to use
and cut out the pieces using a pre-defined pattern. Use
one piece of wood and draw or stick on the image you
want. Look at the pattern on the right – you can use it
for your puzzle.
Instructions
1.
Choose a photo or image that you want for your
puzzle. Print on paper that won’t tear easily. The
best kind of paper is a medium thickness like
photographic paper. You can also draw the image
on the wood.
2.
Take the printed image and with a roller, spread
glue on the back of the image and on one side of
the wood.
Stick the image to the wood.
3.
When the glue dries, draw a pattern similar to the
one shown here.
This will serve as a guide to cut out the pieces.
4.
Finally, cut out the pieces carefully.
Check to see if there are any rough edges and sand
them if necessary.
