How to start
Track 12.
Start the class reviewing the chant from the
previous lesson.
Review the last lesson by asking students how they help at
home. Encourage them to mime and say what they do. Ask
them to turn to the first page in the unit (page 17) where
they drew their family. Ask students questions about their
family members and what they do to help. For example,
Who is that? Does your dad cook at home? Does your sister
lay the table?
Activities: step-by-step guide
Activity 1
Ask the students to look at the illustration. Ask questions,
for example:
What’s Ben doing?
(laying the table),
What’s
Ben’s sister doing?
(playing),
What’s Ben’s father doing?
(cooking). Tell them they need to circle the three people
in the picture who are helping. Encourage them to check
answers in pairs and then check with the class.
Draw a chart on the board:

[drawing
of table]
[drawing
of plates]
[drawing of
shopping bags]
Ben
Ben’s
mother
Ben’s
father
Ben’s
sister
Ben’s
grandpa
Different students come to the front and put an X the correct
boxes according to answers.
Activity 2
Tell the students to look at the pictures of Ben and his family
at home. They need to colour the happy face if the family
member is helping and colour the sad face if they are not
helping. When they have coloured the correct place, they
need to match the person to the correct objects in the row
at the bottom of the page.
Allow time for students to complete the task. When they
have finished, they can check answers with a partner. Check
answers with the whole class.
Point out that people help at home and people also take
turns relaxing. For example, in this case Ben’s mother and
sister are not helping, but could give a hand later clearing
the table or doing the washing up.
Read the sentence at the bottom of the page.
What’s this?
Students look at the photo at the bottom of the page.
Ask:
What’s this?
Hands up to answer (a block of flats).
Invite students to think about what they will talk about in
upcoming lessons based on the image.
Teaching tip
The ‘What’s this?’ corner helps to build anticipation for what
students will be looking at in the next lesson.
