Road safety
1.
Tick the correct actions.
Be safe in the city!
when crossing the street even at zebra crossings. Look at
the photo and discuss whether the pedestrians are using the
zebra crossing correctly or not. Point to the prohibition sign.
Ask:
What is this sign for? Is it safe to walk or NOT safe to
walk?
Explain that this sign means that pedestrians should
not be in this area or that it is dangerous to walk here.

Teaching tip
•
Making real life connections helps students understand
concepts.
•
Read the sentence at the bottom of the page.
Assessment opportunity
•
Place large red, yellow and green circles made of card on
one of the walls of the classroom (like a traffic light – red
on top, yellow in the middle, green at the bottom). Write
“I need help with…” on the red circle; “I’m learning how
to…” on the yellow circle, and “I can…” on the green circle.
Distribute two post-it notes to each student and ask them
to write things to put on two of the circles. For example, I
can sing a song about jobs (green circle); I need help with
traffic signs (red circle).
Extra ideas!
Revision
•
Use pieces of paper or draw an imaginary zebra crossing
on the floor of the classroom. Using red and green circles,
practise when it’s safe to cross the street or not with
different small groups of students.
•
Talk to the students about why it is important to know and
respect basic road safety rules.
Extension
•
In groups of three get the students to make road safety
signs to promote following rules in the city. When they have
finished their signs, they share their ideas with the class.
•
Ask the students to look at signs they pass on their way
to school. See if they can take a photo or draw pictures of
some of the signs they see. Ask the students to share their
findings in class.

Keep in mind that students at this age need a lot of
repetition. Be sure to take time to review and reinforce
